I WORK FOR IGN

the merger closed at 8:32 AM today, making me an official employee of ign entertainment. i've spent the morning crying at my desk. i'm surprised at how affected i've been. i was reading an e-mail that chris buechler -- a long-time gamespy who had been working off-site since i began -- had written proclaiming today his last day with the company. it did me in. our founder is leaving. carlos is gone. gamespy is over. and i now work for ign. it usually takes so much more... but this time i couldn't handle it. the tears came and i had to pretend that i was fine so my cubemate wouldn't notice.

in reality, i'm sure my current status is a product of a combination of a ton of things that have hit me in the past four days... needless to say, i'm not fine. everything is not okay. there's stuff that needs working out... and yet, i have to go to las vegas to work... to prove that i'm capable of performing my job. they're testing me. and i have to perform. how am i supposed to shoot if i can't see?

i should have provided an update on my previous las vegas trip, but i figure a general vegas update will do.... look for that soon. and pictures... i've got more. until then, keep your chin up, so i don't have to. Posted by ryan at March 3, 2004 10:27 AM

Sounds like I missed a very interesting day down there in Irvine. It's crazy that Mark's gone.

What's this testing stuff you're worried about?

well, i had mentioned previously my need for a raise... it's really pretty necessary for me to survive in san francisco without costing my friends too much extra cash. Well, it hasn't been looking to good. Recently, my case was at least partially handed off to Fargo. And he got the idea that I should use my video coverage from DICE as a sort of proof of worth. The problem is, I'd never been to the show before, and really had no idea what to expect. Thus planning video coverage around it was near impossible. Especially since we were having the conversation the day before the show -- which is clearly not enough time to really schedule video interviews or anything. So, I realized that I'd have to wing it, as I always do... The problem is that he wants to show the new bosses the work and say like, "Look, he's worth the extra money..." That's a lot of pressure to perform at what could have very well been a boring event. Luckily, I just shot Bill Roper's presentation which was pretty fantastic. We're gonna post the whole thing as a subscriber exclusive... I wish it would get downloaded like crazy, but it won't. So I just need to really nail down a few more awesome pieces of content before the show's over. Jason Rubin's presentation is coming up soon, so hopefully that will go as well... and a few video interviews would be nice.
